cycling tour jogjakarta

What is the plan?

✔ On our mountain bike we go around the village and fields. We use the small back roads which are safe to cycle. Away from the crazy chaos on the main roads. We will get moving and feel the wind in our hair.

✔ On our way we will be surprised how many products we normally find in the shop have their origin in trees, plants and nature.

✔ The people we meet are more than happy to show us around and let us taste the fresh fruit which grows in their back yard or on the side of the road.
Do you know the names of the fruit?

Nglanggeran volcano Yogyakarta

Nglanggeran; An old volcano

Yogyakarta walking tour

About an hour’s drive from Yogyakarta is the ancient Vulcano Nglangeran.

The ancient volcano Nglanggeran was active until 60 million years ago and is one of the oldest volcanoes in Central Java. The mountain was formed by ancient volcanic material and has two peaks namely the western and eastern peak with a caldera in the middle.

A great walk to the peak

Nglanggeran is easy to climb. In just 1.5 hours of walking through the beautiful scenery of UNESCO Geopark Gunung Kidul, you reach the western peak. Here you have a beautiful view of the landscape, the uniquely formed mountains and the cloudy sky.

Ancient traditions

Based on ancient traditions, only seven families are allowed to live on the mountain. If there are more families, one of the families must leave, if there are not enough, a family must be found to join the community of seven families. If there are more or less than seven families, it brings bad luck.

Go Local

In 2017, the village won the ASEAN Community Based Tourism award and was named one of the best tourist villages in the world by the UNWTO in 2021.
In the village you can see a number of local activities (for example dance, music or mask making), in which you can often participate yourself.
Chocolate is made and sold locally. Delicious and straight from the makers. There are also sporting options such as rock climbing or swinging in the mountains.
Near the village is a beautiful waterfall.
Finally, it is also possible to spend the night here in the region in a homestay close to people’s homes or even a glamping (glamor camping) with a beautiful view. The best way to get to know the real Javanese life!

Sukamade | Spotting Turtles

Spotting turtles in Indonesia

Sukamade is a small village in the national park “Meru Betiri” on the South coast of Java. It is located in the middle of the jungle, isolated from civilization.

Turtles

In the evening after sunset, sea turtles arrive here to lay their eggs on the beach. You can witness this spectacular event. It is impressive to see how the large turtles (100kg-350kg) that live in the ocean, move slowly on land and carefully dig a hole for their eggs (around 100) that they are going to lay. If you are lucky enough to see the turtles come ashore, this is an unforgettable and unique experience to remember!

On average, 2 to 5 turtles arrive at night to lay eggs. The chances of seeing the turtles are the greatest in the months of July and August, but of course there is no 100% guarantee. The whole trip is a very special experience anyway.

Rangers

Sukamade is home to the rangers whose task it is to protect the vulnerable turtles. The rangers ensure that the eggs buried by the turtles on the beach are protected from predators and poachers alike. The project now exists for almost 50 years and is successful.

Once the turtle has laid the eggs and returned to the sea, the eggs are dug up by the rangers and taken to a protected area where they are safe until the little turtles hatch after about 55 days.

The release of the turtles

Because eggs are dug up almost daily, small turtles also hatch almost daily. These little turtles are then released back into the ocean. You can help.

It is really special to see how the turtles instinctively run towards Release the Turtlethe ocean and later, when they are grown – and sometimes live more than 2600 kilometers away – return to the same beach of Sukamade to lay their eggs themselves.

The turtles that lay their eggs on the beach in Sukamade normally live on the East coast of Australia, Papua New Guinea and even the southern Pacific.
It is amazing how these turtles, generation after generation, find their way back to the same beach. The turtles can live up to 100 years. Think about what they have already seen in their life.

Sukamade Jeep Tour

The Jungle

The trip to Sukamade is very adventurous. With a 4WD jeep you drive with your driver through villages, forests and plantations. Along the way you can see how palm sugar is made and at the coast you will stop at a bay where the typical wooden canoes quietly wait for their next sea trip.

Then you continue your way through the jungle on a bumpy road and you even have to cross the river by jeep. Along the way you can encounter giant bats, monkeys, deer, forest cats, beautiful birds and large iguanas (up to 1.5 to 2 meters). Sometimes you hear the sound of a strange steam locomotive… this is the flapping wings of the hornbill. Black panthers also live in this protected area of jungle, and it is said you can find here also the last remaining Javanese tigers.

Tranquility and simplicity

You will spend the night in a simple accommodation. A large shared room with a number of beds and a simple bathroom. At 10 p.m. the generator switches off and there is no electricity anymore, only kerosene lamps.

Just before sunset, hundreds of bats fly over the jungle. In the distance you will hear animal sounds. The whole area is full of peace and quietness. Here you are really away from civilization.

An experience never to forget

The release of a little turtle in the ocean… one day, when it is grown up,  it will return to the same beach

Gunung Andong

Gunung Andong

basecamp Pendem gunung andong

Close to Magelang you can find the Andong mountain. This mountain is very suitable for climbing. You need about 3 hours to get to the top and about 2 hours for the descent.

The tour starts at “base camp Pendem”. Here is a parking lot, a small warung (stall) where you can buy some snacks and drinks. At the warung you pay a small amount for the maintenance of nature and hiking trails on the mountain. The first part you walk through the coniferous forest. The higher you go the lower the vegetation gets until you get a beautiful view.

Andong has two peaks: Puncak Alap-alap and Puncak Andong. When you reach the first peak, you walk over a ridge to the second peak. You have a beautiful view on both sides. The earlier in the morning you go, the more chance you have that the peaks are not yet enclosed by the clouds. On Puncak Andong there is a warung (stall) where you can buy tea and coffee and simple food for a modest price. The shopkeeper of this warung only climbs down once a week. The rest of the days he spends the night on the mountain.

Please note that it can get cold at the top of Gunung Andong. Bring a warm sweater or coat.
